
I. Overview of the school
The college was formerly the School of Science of Wuhan University of Technology established in 2003. In 2018, in response to the development needs of the university, the School of Optoelectronic Information and Energy Engineering and the School of Mathematics and Physics were established. These two schools operate under the same roof. The college adheres to the fundamental task of "cultivating virtue and fostering talents", upholds the educational philosophy of "people-oriented and achieving excellence", and uses the Key Laboratory of Optical Information and Pattern Recognition in Hubei Province and the Hubei Province Physics Teaching Demonstration Center as its platforms. By leveraging industry advantages, it serves the regional economy and strives to cultivate comprehensive innovative talents with a sense of patriotism, an international perspective, solid mathematical and physical foundations, and proficient professional knowledge.
The college currently has a total of over 1,800 full-time undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. It has established a discipline system with distinct advantages, unique characteristics, integration of science and technology, and a reasonable structure. The college has four undergraduate majors: Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Information and Computing Science, and Data Science and Big Data Technology. Among them, the Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering major is a national first-class undergraduate program construction point and a project for cultivating talents in strategic emerging (pillar) industries in Hubei Province; the Information and Computing Science major is a first-class undergraduate program construction point in Hubei Province.
II. Faculty and talent training
The faculty of the college is highly competent. Currently, there are 104 full-time teachers, including 18 professors and 55 associate professors. Among them, there is 1 person participating in the national high-level talent project, 9 people in the provincial high-level talent project, 1 person as a provincial famous teacher, 3 people as provincial outstanding teachers, and 1 person won the first prize of the national young teachers' lecture competition for physics courses in higher education institutions. Additionally, 2 projects won the provincial excellent teaching achievement award and 3 projects won the provincial second-class excellent teaching achievement award.
The college attaches great importance to the all-round development of students in terms of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor. In terms of postgraduate entrance examinations, overseas studies, employment and academic competitions, it provides students with comprehensive services and support. It also sets up "Integrated Undergraduate-Master's Degree" experimental classes, selects outstanding students to join the teaching team, and provides one-on-one professional mentors. As a result, outstanding students such as Kang Housen and Luo Qingyun, who are regarded as the "Self-Motivated Stars" of Chinese college students, "Upward and Benevolent Good Young People" of Hubei Province, and "Model Workers for Learning from Lei Feng" of Hubei Province, have emerged.
In the past 3 years, the college has achieved outstanding results in postgraduate entrance examinations and studying abroad, with an enrollment rate of 38%. Among them, 40 students have successfully been recommended for postgraduate studies, with over 20% of them continuing their studies at 985, 211 and famous universities abroad. A group of excellent graduates have been admitted to famous universities at home and abroad such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Columbia University in the United States, University College London in the UK, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, etc. The undergraduate employment rate has remained stable at over 96%, with many alumni becoming outstanding talents in well-known domestic enterprises such as Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent, Xiaomi, FiberHome, Changfei Optical Fiber, BOE, Ruikai Optical Fiber Laser, etc.
The college's student scientific and technological innovation activities showcase their distinctiveness, winning awards year after year in events such as the China International University Student Innovation Competition (formerly the Internet+ Competition), the "Challenge Cup" Competition, and the Optoelectronic Design Competition, with remarkable results. In the past three years, they have won a total of 222 awards, including 73 national-level awards and 149 provincial-level awards. Particularly noteworthy is in 2023, the college won one “Progressive Innovation Special Award” (the first time our school has won, only 17 awards nationwide) at the 18th National University Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition “Challenge Cup”, and won the highest award - the Gold Award in the Higher Education Group of the national finals of the China International University Student Innovation Competition.
III. Discipline Construction and Scientific Research.
The College has 3 first-level disciplines for master's degree: Optical Engineering, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, and Electronic Information. "Optical Engineering" ranks first among Hubei provincial universities, while "Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics" has been approved as a key (foster) discipline by the Hubei Provincial Department of Education. The key laboratory of Optics Information and Pattern Recognition has been awarded as outstanding in the performance evaluation of the Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology.
Over the past three years, the college has relied on the Wuhan Optics Valley Optoelectronic Information Industry Base, multiple key laboratories in Hubei Province, and has been approved for 15 national key research and development plans, national natural science foundation and other national-level longitudinal research projects. A total of 18 provincial key research and development plans, provincial outstanding youth foundation and other provincial-level longitudinal research projects have been approved, undertaking 46 horizontal research projects. Awarded 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 provincial (ministerial) level scientific and technological achievement awards, granted 35 national invention patents, and published 235 papers in academic journals such as Science, Nature Photonics, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials, etc. by the teachers of the college. 5 monographs were written solely by the teachers of the college, filling the gap in the optoelectronic industry.

01 Optical Information Science and Engineering (Special Experimental Class, 25 students)
This special experimental class relies on the Hubei Key Laboratory of Optical Information and Pattern Recognition to cultivate high-quality talents with patriotic feelings, international perspectives, solid mathematical foundations, strong research abilities, and innovative capabilities.

l Hubei Province's key laboratory is an excellent scientific research platform, supporting high-level research achievements of students.
l Achieve the goal of being recommended or admitted to 985 universities (or CAS) for graduate studies without taking any exams.
02 Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering (Optoelectronic Chip Direction / Advanced Optics Direction)
Focus on two professional directions of optoelectronic chips and advanced optics, adhere to the goal of training high-level innovative talents, cultivate advanced professional talents in optoelectronic information industry scientific innovation, technological research, and engineering applications to meet the national strategic needs.
l The faculty is strong, with more than 40 full-time teachers, including over 30 professors and associate professors, 1 Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 1 National Distinguished Young Scholar, and 8 selected talents for relevant talent projects in Hubei Province.
l Approved as a strategic emerging (pillar) industry specialty in Hubei Province in 2013, approved as a first-class undergraduate specialty in Hubei Province in 2019, and approved as a national first-class undergraduate construction specialty in 2020; with a master's degree program in the first-level discipline of Optical Engineering.
l The postgraduate enrollment rate exceeds 39%, with students going to domestic first-class universities including Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, National University of Defense Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Xiamen University, etc.
l The employment rate has stabilized at over 96%, with employment companies including domestic leading enterprises such as Huawei, Tencent, Xiaomi, FiberHome Communications, FiberHome Technologies, BOE Technology Group, Alibaba, etc.
03 Energy and Power Engineering (Smart Artificial Environment Direction/New Energy and Energy Storage Science Direction)
The first-level discipline master's degree program of "Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics" is a key discipline in Hubei Province, one of the first batch of advantageous disciplines in Hubei Province. It is a discipline with the characteristics of educating talents in the fields of thermal energy, power, air conditioning, and refrigeration, and it has important influence in the central and southern regions of China.
l Having a strong high-level team of teachers, there are currently 13 full-time teachers, including 1 selected from talent projects in Hubei Province and 11 with doctoral degrees.
l In 2023, 14 national awards and 29 provincial awards were won in domestic and international competitions.
l The professional postgraduate entrance rate is 35%, the overseas study rate is 6%, and the destinations for further studies include Peking University, Tsinghua University, Columbia University, University College London, Fudan University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and other prestigious universities at home and abroad.
l The major offers a wide range of employment opportunities, with the employment rate consistently ranking in the top ten on the Michael's undergraduate employment rate list. Employment destinations include well-known domestic and foreign enterprises such as Huane Group, Huadian Group, State Power Investment Group, Datang Group, Gree, Midea, McWear, Tetling, Haier, China Construction Third Bureau, and China Metallurgical.
04 Information and Computing Science (Intelligent Computing Direction / Information and Data Security Direction)
Hubei Province has first-class professional construction sites, cultivating talents with basic knowledge of mathematics and programming, as well as the abilities of mathematical modeling, algorithm design and analysis, software application and development; possessing technical expertise in scientific and engineering computing, data statistics and analysis, information security, and multimedia processing, capable of engaging in research, teaching, application development, and management work in information technology or computing technology.
l The teaching staff is strong and the level of teaching and research is excellent. There are 36 professional teachers in the team, including 3 with senior professional titles and 23 with associate professional titles.
l Students have achieved excellent results in various competitions such as the National College Student Mathematics Competition, Mathematical Modeling Competition, and the Blue Bridge Cup Competition.
l Destination of further study: Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Central South University, Tongji University, University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and other domestic double first-class universities.

05 Data Science and Big Data Technology
One of the currently most popular majors, aimed at cultivating students' data science thinking ability, mastering specialized knowledge and skills in data acquisition, data organization, data analysis and application, data visualization, etc., and becoming high-quality compound talents in the research, development, management, and application of big data systems and related fields.
l The teaching team consists of 35 members, including 3 with senior professional titles and 22 with associate professional titles. The teaching grassroots organization is sound and has won the school-level advanced collective title several times.
l Having a well-developed system of subject competitions that promote learning through competition and teaching through competition. Students have achieved outstanding results in competitions such as the Lanqiao Cup, Internet+, and the National College Student Mathematics Competition.
l The acceptance rate of postgraduate entrance examination is 35%, with students admitted to renowned universities such as Tongji University, East China Normal University, Minzu University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Institute of Technology, etc.
