On the afternoon of October 21, 2025, the School of Optoelectronic Information and Energy Engineering and School of Mathematics and Physics of Wuhan Institute of Technology successfully held the 23rd Graduate Student Innovation Academic Forum in the 401 Lecture Hall of the No. 2 Experimental Building on Liufang Campus. The forum invited Professor Dong Jianji from Huazhong University of Science and Technology to give a special report titled "Optoelectronic Computing and Artificial Intelligence", presenting a cutting-edge technological feast on optoelectronic computing chips to the teachers and students present. The report was hosted by Professor Chen Xiangbai, the dean of the School of Optoelectronic Information and Energy Engineering and School of Mathematics and Physics.

In the report, Professor Dong Jianji systematically introduced the latest research progress of reconfigurable photonic neural network chips. He pointed out that photons have the natural advantage of "propagation equals computing", providing a high-speed and low-power physical platform for artificial intelligence computing. His team innovatively proposed a "black box" physical training model, and constructed an efficient and flexible intelligent computing architecture in the reconfigurable MZI optical matrix operation network and on-chip diffraction neural network. The related achievements have been successfully applied to multiple artificial intelligence tasks, fully demonstrating the broad prospects of photoelectric fusion intelligent computing.

This report focuses on the cutting-edge interdisciplinary field of photonic intelligent computing. It not only delves deeply into the core mechanisms of photonic neural networks but also showcases their broad application potential in the field of artificial intelligence. This has opened up new horizons for the research of faculty and students in the direction of photonic chips and intelligent systems at the university, and further promotes in-depth exchanges and cooperation between Wuhan Institute of Technology and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in the field of photonic information.

Dong Jianji, a professor and doctoral supervisor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is the assistant director of the National Research Center for Optoelectronics in Wuhan. He is the chief scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program, and has received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and the National Hundred Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Award. His research focuses on optoelectronic computing chips. He has won the First Prize of Natural Science of Hubei Province twice and the First Prize of Natural Science of the Ministry of Education once. He serves as the executive editor of the journal "Frontiers of Optoelectronics", a member of the National Committee for Standardization of Intelligent Computing, and a standing committee member of the Fiber Optics and Integrated Optics Committee of the Chinese Optical Society.
