IV. Major Introduction:

1. Training Objectives

This major aims to cultivate students with solid political and ideological qualities, who practice the core socialist values, possess a sense of patriotism, international vision, innovative ability, and good psychological quality. They should master solid basic theories and professional knowledge, have a good sense of teamwork and collaboration, and possess data science thinking ability, as well as specialized knowledge and skills in data acquisition, data organization, data analysis and application, and data presentation. They should have a solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and other fields. They mainly engage in research, analysis, and decision-making in the field of data mining and application. They should have the ability to solve data-intensive problems and conduct research and development in big data applications. They should be cultivated into high-quality compound talents in the related fields of big data system research, development, management, and application, and be able to work in government information management, medical and health big data, big data scientific research, and other related fields, including big data research, big data analysis, big data application development, big data system development, big data visualization, and big data decision-making, and have the ability to pursue higher-level degrees.

2. Professional Characteristics and Advantages

The characteristic of this major is the cross-penetration of statistics, computer science, and other fields. Students will master the basic theories and technologies in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, and be proficient in the collection, storage, and analysis of big data. In practical applications, they can skillfully clean and organize various data, conduct preliminary modeling using exploratory data analysis techniques, and analyze data using basic theories and methods such as statistical inference and machine learning. Students of this major can not only interpret the results of data analysis reasonably but also comprehensively apply the knowledge they have learned to analyze and solve practical problems. The main advantage of this major is the establishment of a complete "competition-driven learning" and "competition-driven teaching" discipline competition system, which enables students to fully exercise their practical abilities. To implement the school's application-oriented talent cultivation plan and deepen school-enterprise cooperation, and cultivate outstanding cross-disciplinary innovative talents with sustainable competitiveness, it has established school-enterprise cooperation with multiple enterprises. The Dolphin Big Data Technology Laboratory has been established to enrich practical teaching content. This major has a strong teaching staff and excellent teaching and research capabilities.

3. Core Courses

The core courses of this major include: Statistics, Introduction to Big Data, Python Programming, Principles of Database, Web Crawling, Data Cleaning, Data Analysis and Mining, Data Visualization, Machine Learning, Hadoop Technology and Its Application, etc.

4. Faculty Strength

The professional teaching team consists of 35 members, among whom 3 hold senior professional titles and 22 hold associate senior professional titles. The teaching organization at the grassroots level is well-established and has been awarded the title of advanced collective at the university level for many times. The faculty team is composed of members with excellent ideological qualities, solid knowledge structures, good teaching effects and strong research capabilities, as well as innovative and team spirit. They have stable research directions and sustainable development capabilities. Many have been awarded the title of university-level teaching masters, and many have received the titles of university-level top 100 mentors, outstanding class advisors, and outstanding mentors. They have hosted or completed multiple national and provincial-level natural science funds. Four have been funded by the China Scholarship Council to pursue further studies in the United States and Canada, and one has obtained a doctoral degree overseas. Five have won awards in the university-level basic teaching skills competition for young teachers. Four core professional course textbooks have been published, and three courses have been approved for construction as university-level gold courses.

5. Student Awards

Students of this major actively participate in various competitions and have achieved remarkable results in the National Software and Information Technology Professional Talent Competition of the Blue Bridge Cup for College Students, the Internet Plus Competition, the National College Students' Mathematics Competition, the Mathematical Contest in Modeling for College Students of the United States, the Hubei Province College Students' Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and many other competitions.

6. Career Prospects

This major began enrolling students in September 2019 and is now welcoming its first batch of undergraduate graduates, with a postgraduate admission rate of 35%. In line with the times and national development strategies, this major will be one of the most promising industries in the future. Graduates mainly work in government agencies and public institutions, banks, hospitals, data centers of financial and securities departments, e-commerce enterprises, big data and artificial intelligence, and other IT industries. Job positions include big data managers, big data analysts, big data engineers, etc. They can also choose to pursue further studies, and the research directions are not limited to data science but can also include computer science, applied statistics, electronic information, and more.
